Most of my life has been revolving around punk rock in terms of records, recording sessions, going to shows, organizing shows and playing shows. I’d say there are a few records that really got me into it and every time I went deeper and deeper.
Green Day – Dookie
In 1996 my brother gave me a tape which had Oasis on one side and Green Day on the other. The Green Day side had Dookie on it. At the time I was a huge Iron Maiden fan and I had no idea what punk rock was or sounded like. While listening to Dookie for the first time I was blown away, that sound was so new to me, so amazing and so addictive. It was the beginning of an era for me, the beginning of an adventure that’s still going on to this day.
Nofx – Punk In Drublic
Shortly after I got into Green Day I saw a Nofx video on tv for the song “Stickin In My Eye”. That was the most amazing thing that I had ever seen. The following day I went to a record store and bought ‘Punk In Drublic’ and ‘I Heard They Suck Live’. ‘Punk In Drublic’ brought me to a new level of punk rock. At the very beginning I could barely figure out what that fast beat was but the more I listened to it the more I liked it. This step opened the gates to the Fat Wreck Chords and Epitaph world unfolding a whole universe of amazing bands I had never heard of.
Satanic Surfers – Going Nowhere Fast
In 1999 I was 16 and my friends and I used to read a monthly magazine called Rock Sound that used to come out with a cd sampler that featured all of the hottest artists of the month, and we would avidly listen to it in search of new bands and sounds.
One of the sampler tracks was “Lean Onto You”, and that was the first time ever I’ve listened to the Satanic Surfers.
I bought ‘Going Nowhere Fast’ as soon as I could and listened to for the first time almost hypnotized. The quality of their music and songwriting was unbelievable and changed my perception of punk rock forever. To this day this is my favourite record.
Thousand Oaks is a skate punk band from Rome, Italy. Their tunes can be listened to on their bandcamp page.
